Student Supports

HELP (Haverhill Extended Learning Program)

The middle school has continued to expand what was once an after-school program into a comprehensive academic support system for students.  In addition to the two-hour afterschool session, the program now offers a morning tutorial program and a summer program.  More information about HELP can be found in a brochure attached below.  The program director, Martha Jenkins, can be contacted by phone at her office (787-2100 ext. 204), by cell (991-4951) or by email at mjenkins@sau23.org.

Math Resources

Attached below are brochures outlining the grade level expectations for students in the area of math.  These documents summarize what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade.  HCMS has been identified as a school in need of improvement in the area of math; as a result, it has taken several steps to improve math performance.  As part of the school's improvement program, the school adopted the Everyday Math program for grades 4 and 5.  Parents can find online assistance with Everyday Math at this website:  http://everydaymath.uchicago.edu/parents/family_letters/.

NH Jobs for America's Graduates (NH-JAG)

The middle school's seventh and eighth grade students can participate in a national program designed to help students develop clearer goals about their education and career choices.  Along the way, these students learn improved communication skills and gain experience in leadership and teamwork.  HCMS is one of only two sites in New Hampshire chosen to pilot a middle school version of a program that has been available at the high school level for many years. This program provides the school a JAG specialist who works full-time and through the summer with up to 30 students.

More information about NH-JAG can be found at the organization's website.

At the bottom of this page is a document that describes the HCMS JAG program in more detail.

Study Island

Study Island is an online tutoring and skill practice resource that students can use to reinforce their reading and math skills.   School improvement grant funds are being used to pay for a school subscription to the website that allows students to access the site's activities from any computer with an internet connection.

Teachers can create lessons for students to complete, set limits to the activities they can access, and adjust the difficulty of the activities.   Students who are regular attenders of HELP's afternoon session will spend one hour a week assigned to an enrichment session where they can work on Study Island activities.

Students must log in to Study Island's website in order to access the activities.  A student's username is the same as the username used to log in to PowerSchool, with the addition of "@hcms" at the end.  (For example, if a student's PowerSchool username is Michael54, then the Study Island username would be Michael54@hcms.)  The password is the same as the PowerSchool password.  To get to the Study Island website, click here.

Supplemental Education Services

Since the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year, HCMS has offered in-home, one-to-one tutoring to students through the state's supplemental educational services program.  The school participates in this program because of its identification as a school in need of improvement in the area of math.

During the 2010-2011 school year, 84 families were eligible to participate in this program.  Of those eligible families, five families enrolled their children in this program.  A total of seven children received this service.  All of the students were tutored by ACES One-on-One Tutoring.

The school is currently in the process of contacting families who are eligible for SES for the 2011-2012 school year.  Initial eligibility letters were sent out on November 1, 2011 to the 92 families who are eligible.  A second round of letters was sent out on December 12, 2011.  Click here for a list of providers who have been approved by the state to provide supplemental education services.

If you have any questions about the supplemental education services program, please contact Mr. Walker at the school.
